TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For an introvert, navigating a crowded night market, with the chatter of strangers and laughter echoing around, is less an adventure than a test of patience.

Travel for introverts isn’t about cramming the itinerary, it’s about finding quiet, rejuvenating experiences. With the right approach, even introverts can enjoy trips that refresh the soul rather than drain it.

Here are five travel tips for introverted travelers:

1. Redefine Travel

Forget exhausting bucket lists. Embrace “slow travel” by spending more time in one place. Travel expert Aviral Gupta, CEO of Zo World and Zostel, suggests savoring quiet moments, such as sitting on a rural inn veranda, sipping tea, and listening to birdsong—without feeling pressured to move constantly.

2. Plan Ahead

Preparation creates comfort. Choose peaceful accommodations like homestays or boutique guesthouses, and bring essentials such as noise-canceling headphones or a favorite book. Planning reduces unwanted surprises and helps maintain your personal space.

3. Choose Less Crowded Destinations

Skip bustling tourist hubs. In Indonesia, opt for Lombok over Bali; in India, Bundi instead of Jaipur. Countries with low population density, like Canada, allow travelers to explore culture and history undisturbed.

Australia offers vast wilderness for those seeking adventure while maintaining solitude. Small bed-and-breakfasts or boutique lodgings maximize privacy.

4. Manage Social Interactions

Introverts aren’t antisocial, they just need boundaries. Short activities like cooking classes or guided tours allow casual conversation without long-term commitment.

If social situations feel overwhelming, John Hackston of The Myers-Briggs Company recommends having a polite exit strategy: “Be prepared to ‘go to the restroom’ or ‘make a call’ if you need to leave.”

5. Protect Your Energy

When feeling drained, use grounding techniques. Take slow breaths, listen to calming music, or focus on ambient sounds like leaves rustling or waves crashing. Plan only one major activity per day and allow time for rest. Solitude isn’t avoidance—it’s self-care.

With these strategies, introverted travelers can enjoy journeys that nourish the mind and body, turning travel into a restorative experience rather than a stress test.
