TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For horror enthusiasts, Halloween becomes a moment to explore spooky places around the world. The website SpinBlitz conducted a survey to find the most haunted places in the world. The result revealed that Salem, Massachusetts, ranked first among the most bone-chilling destinations in the world.
The survey was conducted using various travel sources, including Lonely Planet, Trip.com, and Condé Nast Traveller. They then ranked the places based on TripAdvisor ratings, only including destinations with 1,000 reviews or more in the final ranking.
According to the website, ghost tours, staying in creepy places, and haunted experience packages now generate up to 20 percent of local tourism revenue in some destinations. These travelers are not just looking for the typical haunted houses but are seeking a more terrifying horror experience.
Approximately 41 percent of adults believe in ghosts, and one out of five, or 20 percent, claim to have had a paranormal experience, according to the survey.

1. Salem, Massachusetts
Salem, Massachusetts, with a score of 4.9 out of 5, is a chilling relic of the 1692 Witch Trials in this city. This place is visited by over 1 million people every October, and specifically on 2024 Halloween night, it reached 87,500 visitors.
The location has several eerie spots, like the Witch House and the Salem Witch Trials Memorial. The atmosphere is made even more chilling with flickering lanterns and fog rolling in from the harbor.
2. Corvin Castle, Romania
The Gothic-style Corvin Castle in Hunedoara, Romania, is the place where Vlad the Impaler was imprisoned, the real-life inspiration for Dracula known for impaling his victims with wooden stakes.
Every year, the fortress is visited by 275,000 people. The highest number of visitors is in October, when Dracula enthusiasts and paranormal seekers visit its underground chambers. Visitors claim that the enclosed chambers are chilly, and the dungeons are filled with whispers.
3. Lizzie Borden House, Massachusetts, USA
The Lizzie Borden House in Fall River, Massachusetts, is known as the most haunted house in America. It's reputed to be the site of the killings of Andrew and Abby Borden, an infamous unsolved murder in America on August 4, 1892. Ghost hunters claim to have captured more than 70% EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) sessions overnight, capturing unexplainable voices.
4. Hill of Crosses, Lithuania
The hill in Šiauliai has over 200,000 crosses, crucifixes, and rosaries left by pilgrims since the 19th century. Locals claim to have seen ghostly figures and lights among the erected crosses. This small hill attracts around 100,000 visitors each year, especially in October.
5. Tower of London, England
The Tower of London is known as the site where more than 125 people were executed and many others were tortured in various cruel ways over the course of a millennium. Among the most haunted places in the world, this site attracts 3 million people each year, with Halloween tours being the most popular.
Visitors hope to catch a glimpse of spectral figures like Anne Boleyn or see a waving white ghost from the tower window. The UK ghost societies claim more than 200 separate ghost sightings since the 19th century.
