Indonesia Laments UN's Inability to Secure Gaza Ceasefire

1 day ago 9

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) expressed disappointment over the United Nations Security Council's (UNSC) inability to adopt a resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza. The ministry views this failure as the UN's inability to take a firm stand in halting Israel's attacks on Palestine.

"Indonesia regrets the failure of the UN Security Council to adopt the draft resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid," said the MoFA in an official statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

The MoFA urged broader international cooperation to intensify efforts to stop Israel's attacks and ensure the protection of the Palestinian people.

"Indonesia underscores the urgent need for united international action to uphold International Humanitarian Law and protect civilians, especially women and children, in Gaza." the statement further read.

Furthermore, the MoFA affirmed Indonesia's call for the international community, particularly the permanent members of the UNSC, to fulfill their moral and political responsibilities in halting the ongoing violations by Israel. The ministry underscored the urgent need for a just and sustainable peace in Gaza and the Palestinian Occupied Territories.

The UNSC failed to produce a ceasefire resolution in Gaza after the United States exercised its veto power on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. The U.S. was the sole country to vote against the resolution, while the 14 other council members voted in favor.

The proposed resolution also called for the release of Israeli prisoners held in Gaza. However, Washington argued that this could not be achieved as the ceasefire demand was not directly linked to the prisoner release.

In her address before the vote, Acting U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea clearly articulated the U.S. rejection of the resolution proposed by 10 of the 15 council member states. "The United States has taken the very clear position since this conflict began that Israel has the right to defend itself, which includes defeating Hamas and ensuring they are never again in a position to threaten Israel," she told the council, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

Conversely, Chinese Ambassador Fu Cong asserted that Israel's actions have "crossed every red line" of international humanitarian law and seriously violated UN resolutions. He added, "Yet, due to the shielding by one country, these violations have not been stopped or held accountable."
