Indonesia Leads China 1-0 at Halftime in AFC World Cup Qualifiers

1 day ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The first half of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers match between the Indonesian national team and China, part of the ninth round of the third phase in the Asian zone, concluded with a 1-0 lead for Indonesia. The match is being held at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

Coach Patrick Kluivert made several changes to the lineup for this crucial match. Goalkeeper Emil Audero made his debut for the Indonesian national team, entrusted with guarding the Garuda squad's goal as regular starter Maarten Paes was unavailable due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

In defense, three center-backs were deployed: Jay Idzes, Rizky Ridho, and Justin Hubner flanked by Yakob Sayuri and Calvin Verdonk on the wings. Thom Haye and Joey Pelupessy anchored the central midfield.

Changes were also made to the attacking line, with Ragnar Oratmangoen and Marselino Ferdinan absent due to illness and yellow card accumulation, respectively. Ricky Kambuaya and Egy Maulana Vikri started to support Ole Romeny, who led the attack.

Indonesia launched an early attack through Ricky Kambuaya, but his shot went wide. A minute later, China responded with an attack of their own, but their shot also missed the target.

In the 11th minute, Chinese player Xu Haoyong fouled Yakob Sayuri. Nine minutes later, Egy Maulana Vikri and Ole Romeny combined to penetrate the Chinese defense, though Romeny's shot still missed.

Romeny had another scoring opportunity in the 25th minute, but his volley sailed over the bar.

In the 40th minute, Ricky Kambuaya, attacking from the right flank, was fouled by Yang Zexiang. After a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty kick.

Ole Romeny stepped up to take the penalty and converted it successfully, giving the home team a 1-0 lead in the 45th minute. This marks Romeny's third goal in three matches for the Indonesian national team.
