"I really think that what is happening in Gaza is very bad," Yasushi stated during a press conference at the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
He condemned the dire humanitarian situation, saying, "We are truly shocked by the hunger experienced by the people of Gaza every day. And also the military operations by Israel."
Yasushi stressed the urgent need to end the suffering in Gaza and called on the international community to push for an immediate ceasefire to ease the humanitarian crisis. He also urged global cooperation in ensuring food aid reaches those in need.
In addition, Yasushi highlighted that the conflict in Gaza must be addressed through political channels, emphasizing the importance of a diplomatic resolution.
"The only solution is a two-state solution: Palestine and Israel. So, in my opinion, we have the same position as Indonesia," he said.
Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres raised alarm over the harm suffered by Palestinians while seeking aid. "I'm very concerned about reports of Palestinians being killed and injured when trying to get assistance in Gaza yesterday," Guterres said on Monday, June 2, 2023, as quoted from an official UN press release.
According to CNA, Gaza’s civil defense agency reported that Israeli gunfire killed at least 31 people and injured 176 near an aid distribution point in Rafah on Sunday. Medical staff from a nearby hospital confirmed multiple gunshot injuries.
The Israeli military denied targeting individuals "when they were near or inside" the aid site but admitted that "warning shots were fired at several suspects" approximately a kilometer away.
In response to Guterres’ remarks, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs called his statement "shameful" and criticized him for not condemning Hamas. Israel also claimed it is working with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) to establish better aid distribution systems.
However, the UN has declined to partner with GHF, citing concerns over its neutrality and compliance with humanitarian standards.
The UN also reported on Thursday that over 640,000 Palestinians have been displaced from Gaza since March due to Israeli military evacuation orders.
Since resuming its offensive on March 18, the Israeli military has killed 4,402 and injured nearly 13,490 people, effectively ending the January ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal.
As of Thursday, Gaza health authorities report that the total Palestinian death toll has reached 54,677, with 125,530 others injured since the conflict began on October 7, 2023.
