TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, immediately headed to Singapore after visiting Borobudur Temple in Magelang Regency, Central Java, on Thursday, May 29, 2025.
President Prabowo Subianto personally escorted Macron and his entourage to Yogyakarta International Airport to continue their state visit. Prabowo, accompanied by his son, Didit Hediprasetyo, as well as several ministers, accompanied the French president all the way to the boarding stairs.
During the visit to Borobudur, Macron expressed his admiration for the world's largest Buddhist temple. According to him, Borobudur is evidence of Indonesia's cultural excellence and a symbol of religious tolerance.
Macron emphasized the importance of the cultural partnership launched with Indonesia, namely the preservation of world heritage and the development of the creative industry. He also stressed that Indonesia has a great wealth of heritage and France is ready to share its expertise.
President Macron's departure from Yogyakarta marked the end of his three-day state visit to Indonesia. Macron attended several agendas, including a welcoming ceremony at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, a visit to the Military Academy in Magelang, and a visit to the world heritage site of Borobudur Temple. After personally escorting Macron and his delegation, Prabowo returned to Jakarta.
Macron made a three-day stop in Indonesia, landing on Tuesday night at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base on the French presidential Airbus A330-200, after his earlier visit to Vietnam.
Before getting into the car, Macron took the time to speak briefly to the media. He said he was happy to be back in Indonesia after previously attending the G20 Summit in Bali two years ago.
"I am glad to be here because your country is beautiful. I remember meeting President Jokowi two years ago in Bali. And now my wife, myself, and my delegation are happy to be here, in Indonesia," said Macron before getting into the car.
