Malaysia Condemns Double Standards on Israel's Genocide in Gaza

3 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Malaysian Foreign Minister Malaysia Mohamad Hasan on Sunday, May 25, 2025, condemned Israel's 'atrocities' in Gaza, stating that it reflected 'indifference and double standards' towards the suffering of the Palestinian people.

"The atrocities are a direct result of the erosion of the sanctity of international law," Mohamad Hasan told his counterparts from the ASEAN regional bloc, as reported by Al Arabiya.

Mohamad's comment ahead of the ASEAN summit on Monday, May 26, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur comes as Israel intensifies its attacks this month in the ravaged Gaza.

The bombings have drawn international criticism, along with calls to allow more aid after Israel only slightly eased the total blockade imposed since March 2nd.

"The atrocities perpetrated against the Palestinian people continue to reflect indifference and double standards," Mohamad said.

"ASEAN cannot remain silent," said Mohamad, whose country holds the rotating chairmanship of the bloc.

Foreign ministers from the 10-nation association reaffirmed their 'longstanding support' for Palestinian rights in February.

Muslim-majority Malaysia has no diplomatic ties with Israel and many in the Southeast Asian nation support Palestine.

Kuala Lumpur has channeled donations and humanitarian aid worth more than US$10 million to the people of Gaza since the genocide in October 2023.

The war was triggered by Palestinian Hamas fighters' attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,218 people. Former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant acknowledged a number of casualties from Israeli military strikes in an interview.

Hamas also holds 251 people captive, 57 of them still in Gaza, including 34 people whom the Israeli military claims to have died.

The Gaza Health Ministry said on Saturday that 53,901 people, mostly Palestinian civilians, have been killed in the territory during the genocide.
