TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Philippines received the gavel of the ASEAN chairmanship for the year 2026 from Malaysia during the Closing Ceremony of the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
The gavel of the ASEAN chairmanship was handed over by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, who was the Chair of ASEAN 2025, to the President of the Philippines, Ferdinand "Bongbong" Romualdez Marcos Jr.
"It has been a privilege to host Asean leaders here for intense and illuminating exchanges," said Anwar Ibrahim in his speech at the closing event of the 47th ASEAN Summit, as reported by Antara.
He said that courage and small steps could help the region achieve peace and justice. Anwar thanked all ASEAN friends and dialogue partners for their cooperation and support.
"Without their steadfast support, purpose will have spoken loudly but achieved little," said Anwar.
He emphasized that on the first day of 2026, ASEAN will begin a new phase under the leadership of the Philippines.
"It is a pride for me to hand over the leadership to the Philippines. To my friend Bongbong, good luck," he said.
Anwar believes that with Marcos at the helm, ASEAN will advance further with increasingly clear perspectives and actions.
Meanwhile, Marcos Jr congratulated Malaysia on the successful leadership of ASEAN under the leadership of Anwar Ibrahim.
Bongbong Marcos said that the Philippines is honored to assume the responsibility of the ASEAN chairmanship in 2026.
"We likewise remain dedicated to facilitating the further integration of Timor-Leste into the ASEAN family. ASEAN is our ship, and 2026 will be the year when we set full sail together toward our shared horizon," said Marcos.
