TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has etched its name into football history, securing a remarkable "sextuple" after capturing the 2025 Intercontinental Cup. In a tense final at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Doha, the French giants overcame Flamengo in a dramatic penalty shootout early Thursday morning.
The victory marks PSG’s sixth trophy of the 2024/25 campaign, adding to their haul of Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, the Trophee des Champions, the UEFA Champions League, and the UEFA Super Cup.
The match ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of play, leading to a shootout where goalkeeper Matvey Safonov emerged as the hero. Safonov produced a masterclass in shot-stopping, thwarting four of Flamengo's attempts to secure a 2-1 win on penalties.
The contest began with early drama when a VAR review disallowed an 18th-minute strike from Fabian Ruiz. However, PSG eventually broke the deadlock in the 38th minute. Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia pounced on a pass from Desire Doue, capitalising on a lapse from Flamengo keeper Agustín Rossi to give the Europeans a 1-0 lead at the break.
Flamengo fought back in the second half, equalizing in the 62nd minute. After Marquinhos fouled Giorgian De Arrascaeta in the box, Jorginho stepped up and calmly converted the penalty to level the score.
The deadlock held through regulation and extra time, despite PSG’s relentless pressure. Quentin Ndjantou struck the woodwork in the 107th minute, while late efforts from Ousmane Dembele and Nuno Mendes narrowly missed the target, forcing the game to its final, decisive shootout.
