TNI Manages 2.5 Million Hectares to Support Food Security

9 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of Information Center of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Brigadier General Muhammad Nas stated that the total area of agricultural land and plantations managed by the TNI has reached 2.5 million hectares. The land used for the sustainability program is jointly managed by the Ministry of Defense, local governments, and the community.

"So, if we talk about the total overall, both the community land that we support and the TNI land, our records reach around 2 million hectares," Nas said in a press conference at the TNI Headquarters, East Jakarta, on Tuesday, June 9.

Nas explained that the millions of hectares of land are divided into three domains with different agricultural products. "Some are cultivated by the Army with rice as the product, while the Navy and Air Force cultivate soybeans," he added.

During the event, Nas also clarified the circulating information that the TNI claims the community's agricultural yield as a success of their food sustainability program. According to Nas, the release of community agricultural yields by the TNI is related to the military's involvement in supporting the community.

Nas mentioned that the TNI is actively involved in providing the community with training in land management, cultivation, harvesting, and distributing the harvest. According to him, the community plays the main role in land management, but the TNI acts as a mentor by offering various skills training programs.

"Actually, it is the community in the forefront. We, the TNI, assist," Nas said.

He explained that the program is not a new policy and has been running for several years. The merging of the community's harvest figures with the TNI's food sustainability program is done purely for record-keeping purposes. "It is to communicate the yields, which are intended for our joint records," he explained.

Previously, on May 14, 2026, the government held a soybean harvest managed by the Navy in Ngudikan Village, Wilangan District, Nganjuk Regency, East Java. The harvest was attended by TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran, Chairperson of House Commission IV Siti Hediati Soeharto alias Titiek Soeharto, as well as other heads of staff of other military branches.

According to the official TNI page, the harvest was carried out on an area of 100 hectares in Ngundikan Village and another 400 hectares in Wilangan District. The estimated harvest yield was claimed to be 1.5 to 2 tons per hectare.

In his speech, Agus stated that this activity demonstrates the TNI's commitment to supporting the government's program to strengthen national food security. "We will utilize the idle land available in the TNI and maybe in the villages," he said.
