TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A new US$1 coin featuring President Donald Trump appeared to sell out just hours after the US Mint began offering it Wednesday, September 2, as part of the country's preparations to mark its 250th anniversary.
The coin went on sale at noon through the US Mint's website. By around 3 p.m., the Mint said the 25-coin roll was available for ordering but temporarily out of stock, while the 100-coin bag was listed as unavailable.
"This item is available to be ordered now, but it is not currently in stock. Additional inventory is being made," the Mint's website said, as quoted by AP News.
The Mint did not immediately disclose how many orders had been placed.
The coin has a face value of $1 and features Trump's presidential portrait on one side, alongside the inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "LIBERTY." The other side displays the presidential seal and the number "250" to commemorate the United States' 250th anniversary in 2026.
A roll containing 25 coins is priced at $61, while a bag of 100 coins costs $154.50.
High demand after launch
The Mint's website placed visitors in a virtual waiting area shortly after the sale began, with some users reportedly given estimated wait times of about an hour.
Purchases were initially limited to two per household, with buyers given 10 minutes to complete each transaction. The Mint also warned that product availability was not guaranteed.
The agency said the coins could also turn up in circulation, encouraging people to check their pocket change.
The Mint has included a special feature in some of the coins. A total of 250,000 coins bearing a special "July 4th" privy mark were randomly distributed among the rolls and bags. The coins were struck on July 4, the anniversary of the 1776 Declaration of Independence.
Although the coins have a gold-colored appearance, they are not made of gold. According to the Mint, the coins are composed of copper, zinc, manganese and nickel.
Why Trump can appear on the coin
The coin has also attracted attention because US law generally prohibits the depiction of a sitting president or a living former president on US currency.
However, according to CNN, Congress passed legislation allowing the Treasury to issue special $1 coins for the country's 250th anniversary. The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act permits the creation of such coins under specific design rules.
The legislation prohibits a portrait of a living person on the reverse side of specified coins. Trump's portrait appears on the front of the new $1 coin.
According to the US Mint, the only previous instance of a living US president appearing on a US coin was in 1926, when President Calvin Coolidge was featured on a commemorative half dollar marking the 150th anniversary of American independence.
The new Trump coin is part of a broader series of commemorative initiatives ahead of the United States' semiquincentennial, or 250th anniversary, in 2026.
