Unlike Fuel; Indonesia's Rice Reserve Can Last Longer up to 324 Days

11 hours ago 5

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman stated that the national rice reserve is sufficient for the next 324 days. This figure is based on a current reserve of 27.99 million tons, comprising 3.76 million tons held by the Logistics Agency (Bulog), approximately 12.50 million tons from public stock, and a standing crop of 11.73 million tons.

The estimated duration does not imply that production will cease to replenish the reserve. Amran said, "It's not that after 324 days it's over, but every month the production is at least 2.6 million, and can reach up to 5.7 million. This means it will continue," during a press conference at the Ministry of Agriculture office in Jakarta on Friday, March 6, 2026.

Amran mentioned that rice production from January to May 2026 reached around 16.92 million tons, with monthly output ranging from 2.6 to 5.7 million tons, while national monthly consumption stands at 2.59 million tons. This high production level is claimed as evidence that the national agricultural sector remains resilient despite various global challenges.

Despite the challenges posed by the El Nino phenomenon, Amran stated that its weather impact is not as significant as in previous years, such as in 2015, 2016, and 2023. Furthermore, irrigation infrastructure is reportedly ready to overcome the threat of drought during the dry season.

"In the field, we are prepared; our pumps can reach 1.2 million hectares that don't receive rain," he said.

Amran also mentioned that this year, additional pumps have been prepared to irrigate one million hectares of land to combat drought. Water sources from rivers, reservoirs, and wells have also been secured.

"So, to face this escalating geopolitics and to confront El Nino, we already have experience," he stated.

Furthermore, Amran ensured that a 20 percent decrease in fertilizer prices and the stable availability of seeds will boost production. He also claimed that rice stocks are secure and there will be no further imports this year.
