TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two people were killed and more than 500 were arrested by security forces in Paris, France, while celebrating Paris Saint-Germain's (PSG) victory in the Champions League 2024/25 over the weekend.

The wild celebration took place in the French capital to welcome PSG's victory in the Champions League final held in Munich, Germany on Saturday night local time, May 31.

The French Ministry of the Interior released the number of casualties from the party. "A 17-year-old boy was killed after being stabbed in the city of Dax (southwest of Paris) and a 23-year-old man riding a scooter in the city center of Paris was also killed after being hit by a vehicle," they said as quoted by Euro News on Sunday.

According to the report, 192 people were injured and one security officer went into a coma after being hit in the face by a firework. More than 500 people, specifically 559, were arrested by the police in the ensuing riots.

Following PSG's first-ever Champions League victory, the streets of Paris were filled with fans, including around Champs-Elysees and the Eiffel Tower. They lit flares and fireworks, and waved PSG flags.

Additionally, at PSG's home base, the Parc des Princes Stadium, about 50,000 people gathered to watch the final match of the Champions League on a large screen to witness the club's historic victory.

However, the celebration was also marred by riots in several areas. Several cars were set on fire, bus stops were damaged, and clashes occurred between the police and the masses.

In Champs Elysees, bus stops were destroyed. Meanwhile, riot police attempted to disperse the masses by firing tear gas and water cannons to push them back.

Based on preliminary data from the French Ministry of the Interior, over 200 vehicles were set on fire. There were also about 22 security force members and seven firefighters injured.

The PSG team is scheduled to hold a victory parade at Champs-Elysees on Sunday local time. Around 5,400 police officers will be deployed throughout Paris to secure the club's victory parade under their coach Luis Enrique.
