TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian men's singles player Jonatan Christie relied on experience to overcome his junior opponent, Alwi Farhan, in the round of 16 at the 2026 Indonesia Open held at Istora Gelora Bung Karno, Senayan, Jakarta on Thursday, June 4, 2026. The fifth seed won through a three-game battle with a score of 17-21, 21-17, 21-16, securing a spot in the quarterfinals of the Super 1000-level tournament. "This match was tough because Alwi was also confident after defeating Shi Yu Qi last week," Jonatan said after the game.
The victory extended Jonatan's lead in their head-to-head meetings to 2-0. He also won their first match at the 2025 Korea Open, with a score of 18-21, 21-14, 21-15.
The match was intense from the first game. Alwi played aggressively and took the initiative in the attack to pressure Jonatan. The young Indonesian player briefly led 6-3 before Jonatan leveled the score to 6-6. However, Alwi regained his rhythm and ended the first game with an 11-8 lead. He maintained his momentum after the break and secured the opening game with a score of 21-17.
Jonatan started to rise in the second game. The 2018 Asian Games gold medalist showed more patience when building his attacks and managed to take a 9-6 lead. Although Alwi exerted pressure, Jonatan maintained his lead and took the second game with a score of 21-17 to force a rubber game.
In the decisive game, Alwi once again started aggressively and briefly led 6-3. However, Jonatan slowly managed to match his opponent's play and relied on his experience on crucial points. Alwi had a slight 11-10 lead at the interval of the third game. However, Jonatan took control of the game after the break. He attacked more effectively, suppressing Alwi's aggressiveness and closing the match with a 21-16 victory.
The result ensured Jonatan's place in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Alwi's journey ended despite showing promising performances in several international tournaments.
In addition to Jonatan, Putri Kusuma Wardani also secured a spot in the women's singles quarterfinal after defeating Canada's representative, Michelle Li, with a score of 12-21, 21-18, 21-16. In the men's doubles category, Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating the Chinese pair, Huang Di/Liu Yang, 21-15, 15-21, 21-17. While Raymond Indra/Nikolaus Joaquin created a surprise by eliminating the second-seeded Malaysian pair, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik, with scores of 21-14, 21-14.
Indonesia also placed three representatives in the women's doubles quarterfinals, namely Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Meilysa Trias Puspitasari, Rachel Allessya Rose/Febi Setianingrum, and Amallia Cahaya Pratiwi/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti.
Meanwhile, there were no Indonesian representatives left in the mixed doubles category after Adnan Maulana/Indah Cahya Sari Jamil, Jafar Hidayatullah/Felisha Albertha Nathaniel Pasaribu, and Amri Syahnawi/Nita Violina Marwah were eliminated in the round of 16.
