Apple's iPhone Fold Enters Trial Production Ahead of 2026 Launch

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Foxconn, one of Apple’s main manufacturing partners, has reportedly begun trial production of the company’s long-rumored foldable iPhone, tentatively dubbed the iPhone Fold, ahead of a possible launch later this year.

MacRumors, citing Chinese tech leaker Instant Digital, reported on Monday that the device has entered an early production testing stage at Foxconn, a key milestone before mass production. Other tech outlets have also reported the trial-production claim, though Apple has not officially confirmed it.

According to the report, Apple is targeting July for mass production, provided the device clears testing without major issues. However, a separate Reuters report on Tuesday, citing Nikkei Asia, said Apple is facing engineering challenges in the testing phase that could delay mass production and shipments.

The iPhone Fold is not expected to launch alongside Apple’s traditional September iPhone release schedule. Several rumors suggest it could arrive after the debut of the iPhone 18 Pro series, with some speculation pointing to a release later in the year, possibly as late as December.

Still, Apple is widely expected to unveil the foldable device during its annual September event alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, while shipping it at a later date.

If released, the iPhone Fold would be Apple’s first foldable smartphone. Rumored specifications suggest it will feature a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner screen when unfolded, giving it a book-style form factor similar to a compact iPad. Multiple recent reports have cited the same display sizes.

Apple is also reportedly using a 4:3 aspect ratio, making the device wider and shorter than many foldable phones currently on the market.

In terms of design, the foldable iPhone is said to measure just 4.5 millimeters when unfolded. To achieve that ultra-thin profile, Apple may make several compromises, including dropping a telephoto camera lens and replacing Face ID with a side-mounted Touch ID sensor, similar to the iPad, due to limited internal space. These details remain based on industry leaks and have not been confirmed by Apple.

Apple is also believed to be focusing heavily on minimizing the display crease — one of the biggest design challenges in foldable smartphones. Recent reports suggest the crease on the iPhone Fold may be significantly less visible than on many rival devices.
