TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake struck the city of Tarakan and surrounding areas in North Kalimantan on Wednesday afternoon, November 5, 2025, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The tremor was felt at an intensity of IV–V on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale.
According to BMKG, an intensity of IV MMI indicates that the quake was felt by many people indoors, causing windows and doors to rattle. At level V, nearly everyone can feel the tremor, with some people awakened, fragile items breaking, and larger objects and poles swaying.
Initial BMKG data showed that the 4.8-magnitude earthquake occurred at 5:37 p.m. local time. The epicenter was located 24 kilometers southeast of Tarakan, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
“The earthquake was a shallow quake caused by activity along the Tarakan Fault,” said BMKG’s Director of Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation, Daryono, in a statement issued shortly after the event.
Residents in Tarakan reported strong shaking in response to BMKG’s post on social media platform X.
“Allahu Akbar, Tarakan felt it strongly,” one user wrote, while another advised, “Don’t go back inside yet, stay outdoors.”
A local resident contacted by Tempo also confirmed the intensity of the tremor, saying, “It was quite strong.”
BMKG reported that the quake was also felt in Bunyu Island at intensity IV MMI, while in Tanjung Selor, Berau, and Nunukan it was felt at intensity III–IV.
In Malinau, the shaking reached intensity III, described as noticeable indoors and comparable to the passing of a heavy truck.
