Indonesia Finalizes Review of 52 Sports Ahead of the 2025 SEA Games

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy for Improving Sports Achievement at Indonesia's Ministry of Youth and Sports, Surono, said that his department has finished synchronizing and reviewing the sports branches that will be sent to the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand. The process concluded on October 31, 2025.

"We conducted this review to ensure that each sports branch has the opportunity to win gold medals," said Surono at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Office in Jakarta on Thursday, November 6, 2025.

According to him, the ministry called on the sports branch management and conducted continuous reviews of the results of the national training camp (pelatnas). "We called the sports branches, reviewed them, and then synchronized the results of the training camps continuously without interruption," he said.

Surono explained that the national training camp has been running for the past few months, specifically for sports branches to be contested at the SEA Games. So far, 52 sports branches have undergone the review process, an increase of four from the previous total of 48.

He mentioned that the review process between the sports branch management and the Kemenpora review team was challenging. The team included sports practitioners and experts, as well as representatives from the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) and the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI). "Since October 31, everything has been reviewed. Although the process was quite long and full of discussions," said Surono.

Despite the debates, Surono claimed that the final results were positive. He said that both the major sports branch management and the review team were equally optimistic that the Indonesian contingent would achieve great success in Thailand. "In essence, we are optimistic about being able to produce proud achievements for Indonesia," he said.

However, Surono is not yet able to disclose the target for medal acquisition at the event. The review team is currently analyzing the potential medals from each sports branch. "For measurable sports, the data is easier to track. But for team and subjective martial arts branches judged by referees, it is more difficult," he said.

According to Surono, one of the team's challenges is calculating the probability of winning gold, silver, or bronze in team sports. "We are still processing this," he said.

He also mentioned that several sports branches will not be contested in Thailand, even though they previously contributed 87 gold medals and helped Indonesia become the overall champion at the 2023 SEA Games. "From those branches, we will lose about 41 gold medals," he said.

Although losing several events, Surono sees new opportunities from sports branches that will not be contested in Cambodia but will be competed in Thailand. "From there, there is the potential for an additional 32 gold medals," he said.

Taking all these factors into account, the Sports Ministry targets 78 gold medals at the 2025 SEA Games. "To maintain the third position, we need to obtain at least between 13.84 and 15.90 percent of the total of around 577 gold medals being contested," said Surono.
