TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported that three tropical systems are currently active around the country. BMKG head Teuku Faisal Fathani said the systems include Tropical Cyclone Bakung, Tropical Cyclone Seed 93S, and Tropical Cyclone Seed 95S.
Faisal explained that Cyclone Bakung is developing southwest of Lampung and is currently moving away from Indonesia. However, BMKG monitoring shows that the system could intensify from Category 1 to Category 2.
He noted that Tropical Cyclone Senyar, which previously triggered extreme weather in Sumatra, was recorded only as a Category 1 system.
“At the moment, there are three cyclonic systems surrounding Indonesia. The first is Cyclone Bakung,” Faisal said during a full cabinet meeting chaired by President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace on Monday, December 15, 2025.
BMKG forecasts that Cyclone Bakung could potentially move closer to Indonesian territory. As a result, the agency will continue to closely monitor its development over the next two to three days. Faisal said BMKG hopes the cyclone will not enter or approach Indonesia, as this could lead to increased rainfall.
“We will continue to monitor its dynamics. Our hope is that it does not enter or move closer, so it will not affect rainfall levels,” he said.
In addition to Cyclone Bakung, BMKG is also monitoring Tropical Cyclone Seed 93S over Bali, Nusa Tenggara, and East Java, as well as Tropical Cyclone Seed 95S south of Papua. The presence of these systems could trigger high to very high rainfall and generate dangerous sea waves in waters surrounding Indonesia.
BMKG said it has coordinated with the public through cooperation with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), regional disaster agencies (BPBD), and the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), urging people to remain calm while staying alert to the risks of heavy rain and high waves.
Faisal emphasized that Indonesia is not facing the potential impacts of the three systems alone. He noted that Indonesia has been designated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as a Tropical Cyclone Warning Center.
BMKG continues to coordinate with Australia, Japan, and India to monitor the development of Cyclone Bakung as it approaches the region. On December 14, the cyclone briefly intensified to Category 3, with wind speeds reaching 65 knots.
“That condition was extremely dangerous, but it has since weakened to Category 2 and is expected to further weaken to Category 1,” Faisal said.
