TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, announced that the government will lower airfare by 13 to 14 percent for the Christmas and New Year 2026 holiday period. The discount applies to the economy seat on domestic flights.
"We want to ensure that all citizens can enjoy aviation services, especially during the Christmas and New Year periods," Dudy said in a written statement on Tuesday, October 21, 2025.
According to him, the measure follows President Prabowo Subianto's previous directive, aiming to maintain the momentum of economic growth by advancing household consumption and the people's purchasing power in the second semester of 2025.
Dudy explained that this policy is also part of the government's commitment to ease the burden of people who intend to travel during the year-end holidays. He explained that this step was taken to ensure that inter-regional connectivity is maintained, and people's mobility runs smoothly with more affordable fares.
The lowered airfare applies to flights from December 22, 2025, to January 10, 2026, with the purchasing period starting from October 22, 2025, to January 10, 2026.
This policy is based on several regulations, including the Minister of Transportation Decree No. KM 50 of 2025 regarding the reduction of fuel surcharge for domestic flights; the Ministry of Finance Regulation No. 71 of 2025, which stipulates that the Value Added Tax for economy class aviation services is borne by the government; and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation Director's Decree No. KP-DJPU 235 of 2025, which offers discounts of up to 50 percent on airport service fares during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The discounted airfare is obtained from the adjustment of several cost components, such as the 6 percent VAT borne by the government, a 2 percent reduction in fuel surcharge for jet aircraft, and a 20 percent reduction for propeller aircraft, as well as a discount of up to 50 percent for passenger service, landing, parking, and aircraft storage fees.
In addition, the reduction in jet fuel prices at 37 airports and the extension of flight operational hours have also contributed to the lower airfare this year.
