Indonesia to Hold Crescent Sighting for Ramadan at 96 Locations

6 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs will conduct a crescent moon sighting (rukyatul hilal) to determine the start of Ramadan 1447 AH on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. The observation will be conducted simultaneously at 96 locations across various regions in Indonesia.

The Director General of Islamic Community Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Abu Rokhmad, stated that the results of the crescent moon observation will be discussed together in the isbat (determination) meeting for the start of Ramadan 1447 AH on the same day.

According to him, the isbat meeting will reconcile the hisab (calculation) data with the results of the rukyatul hilal. "The government is striving to ensure that the determination of the start of Ramadan is carried out scientifically, transparently, and involves all relevant elements," he said, as reported on the MUI website on Monday, February 16, 2026.

He explained that, based on hisab calculations, the ijtimak (conjunction) for Ramadan this year will occur at 7:01 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time) on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. To determine the start of Ramadan, he said, the position of the crescent moon at sunset must be below the horizon with an altitude ranging from -2° 24 minutes 42 seconds to -0° 58 minutes 47 seconds, and an elongation angle of 0° 56 minutes 23 seconds to 1° 53 minutes 36 seconds.

To complete the hisab data, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will conduct rukyatul hilal (crescent moon sighting) at 96 locations across Indonesia. These observations will be conducted by officers from the provincial and district/city Ministry of Religious Affairs Regional Offices, in collaboration with Religious Courts, Islamic organizations, and various other relevant agencies.

Abu Rokhmad added that the results of the rukyat (the sighting) from all these points will be the main topic of discussion in the isbat (seeking the sighting) session. The final decision on the date of Ramadan 1447 AH will be officially announced after the session concludes, through a post-session press conference.
