TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and the Netherlands will co-host the 2027 UN Peacekeeping Ministerial (UNPM) in Jakarta in the fourth quarter of 2027, Indonesia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
“Through this joint leadership, Indonesia seeks to garner political support, foster inclusive international cooperation and ensure UN peacekeeping operations remain effective, responsive and well resourced,” Indonesia's UN envoy Umar Hadi said.
It will be the first time Indonesia hosts the forum. Germany handed over the hosting role during a meeting of the UN Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations in New York on Thursday.
The meeting was attended by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, host of the 2025 UNPM, Indonesia's Ambassador Umar Hadi and Dutch Ambassador Lise Grégoire van Haaren.
Also present were UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support Atul Khare and Under-Secretary-General for Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance Catherine Pollard.
Hosting the 2027 UNPM in Jakarta will give Indonesia an opportunity to promote political commitments and joint solutions to peacekeeping challenges while strengthening cooperation among member states, troop-contributing countries and the UN.
Indonesia first deployed peacekeepers in 1957 through the UN Emergency Force (UNEF) in Sinai, Egypt. Since then, it has deployed more than 60,000 peacekeepers to various parts of the world.
Four Indonesian peacekeepers serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) died in incidents in Lebanon in March and April 2026. Indonesia says the losses have not diminished its commitment to UN peacekeeping.
Amid shifting international dynamics, UN peacekeeping forces continue to play an important role in maintaining international peace and security.
Peacekeeping operations must go hand in hand with stronger political solutions and post-conflict peacebuilding to promote sustainable peace, Indonesia said.
