TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian female tennis player Janice Tjen has made history by breaking into the world's top 80 in the WTA rankings. She achieved this milestone after winning the WTA 125 Jinan Open 2025 in China last week.
Her victory in Jinan propelled Janice's ranking up 18 positions, marking an impressive season with a record of 72 wins and 14 losses. She became only the third Indonesian tennis player to win a WTA tournament after Yayuk Basuki and Angelique Widjaja.
Prior to her success in Jinan, Janice had already broken into the Top 100 in the world after competing in the WTA 125 Suzhou in China. In that event, she teamed up with Aldila Sutjiadi to claim the doubles title. Janice's doubles ranking also rose to 154th in the world, while Aldila currently ranks 45th globally.
Janice's journey in the Asian tour began with the WTA 1000 China. Although she was eliminated in the first round, her victories in the qualifying rounds still allowed her to climb one spot to 102nd in the world rankings. Previously, her debut at the WTA 250 Sao Paulo, Brazil, resulted in a runner-up position and a significant leap from 130th to 103rd in the world.
Grand Slam Breakthrough
Janice's name initially rose to prominence after her outstanding performance at the 2025 US Open. In her Grand Slam debut, she defeated Russian player Veronika Kudermetova in the first round after breezing through the qualifiers without dropping a set. This achievement ended Indonesia's 21-year wait for a female singles representative in a Grand Slam main draw, a feat last achieved by Angelique Widjaja at the 2004 US Open.
According to WTA records, before her appearance in New York, Janice had won 45 out of her last 50 professional matches, reached nine ITF finals, claimed six titles, and soared from 371st to 149th in the world rankings in just a few months.
