TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto has prohibited officials from holding excessively grand open house events during Eid al-Fitr. The open house is a tradition commonly observed by Indonesians, including public figures, during the festive season.
Approaching Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah, Prabowo has asked officials to refrain from hosting extravagant events. He stated that Indonesia needs to practice frugality, starting with its leadership.
"We also need to set an example; open house events should not be overly lavish," Prabowo said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Friday, March 13, 2026.
Prabowo reminded that many people across the country are still reeling from recent disasters. "Our brothers and sisters are in disaster-stricken areas; we need to set an example for the people," said the Gerindra Party Chair.
However, Prabowo clarified that the prohibition of extravagance does not mean officials are barred from holding open houses altogether. He noted that various events during the festive season remain necessary to keep the economy moving. "But we also shouldn't completely shut down all events. Otherwise, our economy will be at a standstill," he added.
Officials in Indonesia frequently host open houses during Eid al-Fitr, including presidents who traditionally hold them at the Presidential Palace. Last year, President Prabowo held an open house on the first day of Eid al-Fitr 1446 Hijri at the Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta on Monday, March 31, 2025. The event took place following the morning Eid prayer at the Istiqlal Mosque.
Guests were not immediately able to meet Prabowo and were asked to wait in a blue tent erected within the palace complex. Prabowo served traditional Eid dishes in the palace courtyard, specifically prepared for the public during the 2025 festivities.
In the waiting area, a variety of food was arranged on the tables with plates placed at several points. The spread included various dishes ranging from chicken curry, chayote soup, and chicken liver to rice cakes with vegetables. Teppanyaki and Solo meatballs were also provided. In addition to the food, various drinks were served, including es teler, tea, and coffee.
