Thailand Floats Shin Tae-yong as Potential Coach After Ichii Exit

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japanese coach Masatada Ichii is no longer the head coach of the Thailand National Team. Names such as Anthony Hudson, Park Hang-seo, and Shin Tae-yong are being considered as the new coach for the Thai squad.

Quoted from Thai PBS on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, Vice President of the Football Association of Thailand (FA Thailand) Charnvit Polcheewin explained that Hudson is the strongest contender ahead of Park Hang-seo and Shin Tae-yong. Nevertheless, several Thai names are also floated as potential names for the team's coach.

Charnvit explained that Hudson is the strongest candidate because the British coach is already familiar with the Thai football landscape. Local coaches such as Kiatisuk Senamuang, Sasom Pobprasert, and Totchtawan Sripan are also under consideration.

"We are reviewing profiles of both Thai and foreign coaches. Hudson has a strong case, but we’re also considering others, like Kiatisuk Senamuang, Sasom Pobprasert and Totchtawan Sripan, though some of them have club commitments," said Charnvit. "Whoever is chosen will need to submit a full coaching plan and be ready to take on the pressure. It’s a short time, but high stakes."

Hudson currently serves as the Technical Director of FA Thailand. In addition, Park Hang-seo is currently the vice president of the South Korean Football Association, while Shin Tae-yong is currently a free agent after parting ways with Ulsan HD.

Previously, FA Thailand officially parted ways with Masatada Ishii, citing differences in work direction and coaching approach. This sudden decision has received criticism from Thailand National Team supporters as the White Elephant squad is currently fighting to qualify for the 2027 Asia Cup final rounds.

In response to the criticism, Charnvit said that FA Thailand accepts it and explained that this decision was not made hastily. "The technical committee weighed many factors. We were worried that, if we continued with the current setup and things went wrong, it would be too late to change course," he said.

"We had to think about player selection and tactics. If a change had to be made, it had to happen now, not after we risked everything," added Charnvit.

Currently, the Thailand National Team is striving to qualify for the 2027 Asia Cup final rounds, perching at second place at Group D.
