TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Democratic Party candidate Zohran Mamdani has won the New York City mayoral election, breaking the record as the first Islamic leader of one of the largest cities in the US. As a mayoral candidate, he made political promises to the people of New York.
Here are the five main campaign vows made by Zohran Mamdani, as reported by Hindustan Times. These promises are likely to influence his policies while in office.
Rent Freeze
Zohran Mamdani's campaign focused on the high cost of living in the city. He pledged that, as the majority of New Yorkers are renters, he would freeze the rent paid by stabilized tenants. This is intended to halt the population exodus from the city and save money for its residents.
Affordable Housing
According to Mamdani's official campaign website, he plans to double the production of permanent affordable housing, built by labor unions, with stable rental prices in the city. Mamdani plans to build 200,000 new housing units over the next 10 years. He also promises to use public funds for affordable housing construction.
He also stated his intention to realize a comprehensive plan for New York City, which will aim to end the legacy of racial discrimination in housing policies.
City-Owned Grocery Stores
One of the biggest talking points of Mamdani's opposition is that he's a socialist. The controversial aspect of his policy views has arisen in his plan to manage grocery stores in New York City.
The price hikes of foodstuffs are a major issue for the people of New York. Mamdani proposed that city-owned grocery stores sell at wholesale prices.
Because these stores will be operated by the city government, they will not have to pay rent and property taxes. Centralized warehousing and procurement from local suppliers are expected to make this plan a success.
Taxing the Super Rich
Zohran Mamdani will impose higher taxes on companies in the city and on the wealthiest 1 percent of New Yorkers. According to Mamdani's campaign website, his administration will increase the corporate tax to 11.5 percent, equivalent to the tax in New Jersey. He claims this will generate an additional $5 billion in revenue. Additionally, he will impose a flat tax of 2 percent on the wealthiest 1 percent of New Yorkers. The increase in revenue is a consideration to fund other social benefit schemes.
Free Childcare
For all children aged six weeks to five years, Mamdani promises free childcare services. Additionally, he plans to raise the salaries of childcare workers to the same level as those of public school teachers.
According to Mamdani, the high cost of childcare forces many people to leave New York, and working mothers to quit their jobs. Free childcare should address these issues.
Difficult to Fulfill Mamdani's Promises?
A senior researcher at the Manhattan Institute, Nicole Gelinas, says that Zohran Mamdani cannot do these things unilaterally. "To freeze the rent, he needs the vote of an appointed board whose members, by state law, must consider a host of objective factors. To make the buses free, he'd need the assent of the state-run Metropolitan Transportation Authority, so, in practice, he'd need the governor to agree," she said, as quoted from Newsweek.
On the other hand, Laura Tamman, a clinical assistant professor of political science at Pace University, says that Zohran Mamdani's promises are still likely to be fulfilled. He has already received support from Governor Kathy Hochul to realize his programs.
Tamman says, "I actually think the opposite is true, that people are painting his proposals as wildly unrealistic and that is not how I view them. I think they’re very likely to happen."
