TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cambodian national team coach Koji Gyotoku said the crushing 5-1 defeat to Indonesia was a valuable lesson for his team.
This defeat occurred in a Group A match of the 2026 AFF Cup at Pakansari Stadium, Bogor Regency, West Java, on Monday. His team's only goal came in the 48th minute through Sokmeng Chea.
"It's a shame we lost this match, but we gained good experience because Indonesia is a team with quality players," Gyotoku said at a post-match press conference at Pakansari Stadium on Monday.
The five goals conceded by his team in this match were scored by three different players. Indonesian debutant Mitchell Baker scored three goals, while Sandy Walsh and Jens Raven scored the other two.
This was Cambodia's second defeat after being defeated by Singapore in the first match.
For Indonesia, this is a good start, moving them to third place with three points, while Cambodia is in fourth place with no points.
Cambodia's chances of advancing to the semifinals are slim, but Gyotoku emphasized that his team has not given up.
In the final group stage match, Cambodia will face Timor Leste at home on Monday (August 3) at 5:30 PM WIB, followed by an away match against Vietnam four days later.
"We will give our best in these two remaining matches," concluded the Japanese coach.
