Indonesia Calls for Stronger Human Rights Protections at UNHRC Anniversary

2 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Indonesia called for strengthening universal respect for human rights and increasing trust in the international human rights system at the 20th anniversary of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 19.

As reported by ANTARA, this was conveyed by the Indonesian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Sidharto R. Suryodipuro, in a written statement from the Indonesian Permanent Mission (PTRI) to Geneva.

As the representative of Indonesia, the president of the UN Human Rights Council, Ambassador Sidharto, emphasized that the future and effectiveness of the council depend on trust built through consultation, dialogue, and genuine partnerships.

Luis Alfonso de Alba, the first president of the UN Human Rights Council, expressed a similar view. He recalled the challenges of building consensus in the early days of the Council, when member states held diverse views and the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon influenced the dynamics of the discussions.

According to him, two decades later, these geopolitical challenges are still relevant and even more impactful.

The UN Secretary-General believes that human rights are now facing increasingly systematic threats. UN Special Rapporteur Rasheeda Nasheed expressed a similar view, particularly regarding the pressures faced by the UN special rapporteur system and civil society in voicing their concerns.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk highlighted several achievements of the Human Rights Council, including the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism and the development of international human rights standards. He also emphasized the Council's role as an inclusive UN forum.

However, Turk said updates are still needed to make the Human Rights Council more responsive to emerging issues such as climate change, artificial intelligence (AI), and the post-2030 development agenda.

The discussion also emphasized the importance of ensuring that the Human Rights Council's findings and recommendations extend beyond Geneva to reach local communities through the efforts of UN Special Rapporteurs, national human rights institutions, and regional organizations.

The youth representative from Jordan, Malak, emphasized that the participation of the younger generation must not be merely symbolic but must truly be heard in the decision-making process.

For Indonesia, the 20th anniversary of the Human Rights Council holds special significance. Since the Council's establishment in 2006, Indonesia has been elected a member six times, served twice as vice president (in 2009 and 2024), and is holding the presidency for the first time.

According to PTRI Geneva, this track record reflects Indonesia's commitment to advancing human rights.
