Canada Imposes Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods as Trade Tensions Rise

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade tensions between Canada and the United States escalated Tuesday as Ottawa imposed new tariffs on U.S. imports, adding to a growing dispute between the two neighboring countries.

The retaliatory tariffs cover about C$27.6 billion (US$20 billion) worth of U.S. goods and range from 15% to 50%. They target hundreds of products, including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, furniture, clothing and electronics.

The measures took effect at 12:01 a.m. local time and match U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods on a dollar-for-dollar and rate-for-rate basis. Canada introduced them in response to Washington’s decision to impose 50% tariffs on C$27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods starting August 22.

The Canadian government said the counter-tariffs do not apply to U.S. goods already in transit to Canada when the measures took effect.

Trade talks remain stalled

The tariffs come after trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington broke down in late August without an agreement.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said his government remains open to a deal that serves the interests of both countries.

“We're ready to sit down and strike that deal when the Americans are ready,” Carney said last week, as cited by BBC.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, however, said the responsibility for restarting negotiations lies with Canada.

“We offered them the best deal, they looked at it square in the face and turned around,” Greer said in an interview with Fox News.

There are currently no active negotiations between the two countries, according to reports. The dispute has also raised uncertainty over the future of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade framework.

Trump Threatens to Block Bombardier Aircraft Sales in US

The trade tensions escalated further Monday when U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to block Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier from selling planes in the United States unless the company moves production to the country.

“NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES! Their products aren't good enough!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, as quoted by DW.

“If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a 'piggybank',” he added.

Trump did not specify how the United States would prevent Bombardier from selling aircraft in the country.

Bombardier responded by highlighting its economic footprint in the United States, saying its operations support tens of thousands of American jobs. The company also said it works with about 2,800 U.S. suppliers across 47 states and spends more than $2.5 billion annually with American suppliers.

The Canadian aircraft maker has thousands of workers in the United States, while its aircraft are widely used by U.S. operators.

The latest measures mark another escalation in an 18-month trade dispute between the neighboring countries. Canadian officials have sought to keep the door open to negotiations, while the Trump administration has continued to threaten additional measures against Canadian exports.
