TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) reported that the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait has re-entered the Strombolian phase with a relatively short duration and amplitude of eruptions.
Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, said that Mount Anak Krakatau's eruption characteristics have returned to normal. "It has now returned to the typical Strombolian phase of Mount Anak Krakatau. Eruptions occur with a moderate amplitude, are not too long, and last only a few seconds," Lana said in Bandung on Tuesday, as quoted by ANTARA.
She explained that, based on seismic monitoring at the volcano's observation post, there had been a consistent decrease in seismic vibrations since September 5. "According to the latest observations on September 8, eight small eruptions were recorded, each lasting between 10 and 15 seconds. The distribution of eruptive material and volcanic ash was observed to be concentrated around the slopes and crater body," she said.
She confirmed that Mount Anak Krakatau's current condition differs from that of the December 2018 eruption, which triggered a tsunami when part of the mountain collapsed into the sea. "Meanwhile, deformation data analysis currently shows no shifting of the crater walls that could potentially trigger a landslide into the water," she said.
Lana said that the improvement in atmospheric conditions after the ash column spread decreased also had a positive impact on commercial flight operations.
Several airports that were previously affected by the spread of volcanic ash have resumed operations after it was declared that flight safety aspects had been met.
"Meanwhile, for fishermen along the Sunda Strait coast, fishing activities have returned to normal, with the recommendation to continue wearing eye protection and masks to anticipate exposure to light ash," she said.
Although volcanic activity has begun to subside, the Geological Agency is maintaining Alert Level III for Mount Anak Krakatau. "Although volcanic activity has begun to decline since September 5, the status remains Alert (Level III) with a safety radius of three kilometers," said Lana.
