FPI Urges Prabowo to Publicly Express Condolences Over Khamenei's Death

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Islamic Brotherhood Front (FPI) has requested Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to convey condolences openly for the passing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, who died in a U.S. and Israel airstrike. According to FPI, expressing condolences only through a letter is not enough.

According to the Secretary of the FPI Advisory Council, Hanif Alatas, this request is the mandate of former FPI grand imam Rizieq Shihab. "We ask the President not only to send the Foreign Minister to convey condolences, but we ask the President to convey condolences openly," said Hanif after breaking the fast with Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Thursday night, March 5, 2026.

Hanif stated that Prabowo should publicly convey condolences because Iran is a friendly country. He believes that Indonesia should always provide the best support to Iran in defending its sovereignty from U.S.-Israeli attacks.

According to Hanif, Indonesia should take a firm stand against colonialism on the face of the earth. "I think Iran's stance in defending its sovereignty needs to be supported," he said.

Hanif mentioned that FPI's suggestion was conveyed to Prabowo through a letter. They did not have the opportunity to speak with the President at the breaking of the fast event and discussion at the Presidential Palace.

Initially, Prabowo invited Rizieq to come to the Palace and attend the event. However, Rizieq was unable to attend and was represented by Hanif Alatas, who is also his son-in-law.

Previously, Prabowo sent a letter to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to express condolences for Khamenei's death.

Prabowo entrusted the letter to Foreign Minister Sugiono. Sugiono then handed Prabowo's condolences to the Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi.

Sugiono met with Boroujerdi at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. "I also handed over a letter from President Prabowo to President Masoud Pezeshkian, conveying deep condolences for the passing of HH Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran," Sugiono said via his Instagram @menluri.
