TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has responded to the controversial red card involving United States striker Folarin Balogun, asserting that the competition’s credibility has been undermined by a lack of certainty in the rules.
"When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined," UEFA stated on its official website, monitored from Jakarta on Monday.
Balogun was sent off during the US team's Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. That disciplinary action would have barred the forward from playing in the Round of 16 clash against Belgium.
However, FIFA opted against enforcing an immediate suspension, clearing the host nation's top scorer to take the pitch.
Balogun's reinstatement followed a Thursday phone call between US President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss the suspension. On Sunday, President Trump publicly thanked FIFA for what he described as reversing a grave injustice.
UEFA contended that the decision to effectively shelve the automatic one-match ban triggered by Folarin Balogun’s red card went too far.
For UEFA, football, like any other sport, relies on rules that anchor fair, honest, and transparent competition. While regulations can occasionally be open to interpretation, this scenario offered no such leeway. In Balogun's case, there was simply no ambiguity.
The European body maintained that an automatic minimum one-match suspension following a red card is non-discretionary and requires no further intervention from a competent panel to take effect.
This principle is embedded within the regulations and cannot be discarded, particularly midway through a tournament where numerous other players have faced identical sanctions and served their time accordingly.
Such a ruling, UEFA warned, sets a precedent for the remainder of the tournament, forcing similar incidents to be treated with equal leniency to the detriment of the competition.
UEFA added that football retains its global devotion because it is a beautiful game, trusted universally because it is governed by a uniform set of rules everywhere.
A tournament never operates alone, and when that tournament happens to be the World Cup, it has the power to have positive or negative consequences for the game as a whole. "We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision," UEFA said.
