TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - India is keen on forging an AI partnership with Indonesia within the framework of BRICS to expand its implementation in healthcare, agriculture, MSMEs, and society as a whole.

Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty said the two countries have deep opportunity to bolster AI cooperation through direct applications that benefit society.

In an exclusive written interview with Antara regarding India's chairship at BRICS on Friday, Chakravorty described how AI is one of the key components of the pillar of innovation as part of the four priority pillars of India's chairship. The other three pillars are resilience, cooperation, and sustainability.

According to Chakravorty, one potential area of AI for Indonesia and India to optimize together is language technology to bridge communication between people who speak different languages.

This collaboration is considered crucial for Indonesia and India, which have enormous linguistic diversity and the largest number of languages in the world.

"We can collaborate on language technology, particularly technologies that make AI more accessible to communities speaking diverse languages," said the Indian Ambassador.

To support this, universities and researchers from both countries must strengthen partnerships through joint research, particularly in the field of AI, he said.

The Indian Ambassador also called on policymakers from both countries to boost knowledge and expertise exchange to ensure responsible AI governance.

"We have also established a Joint Working Group on Digital Technology, which is authorized to review this cooperation sector," he added.

The 18th BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place in New Delhi, India, on September 12-13, 2026. This year's international cooperation forum carries the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability."

Indonesia joined BRICS on January 6, 2025, bringing the total members to 11: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Indonesia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.
