TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia’s U-17 national team suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat to Malaysia in their Group A match of the 2026 AFF U-17 Championship at Gelora Joko Samudro Stadium in Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, on Thursday evening.
The only goal of the match was scored by Mohammad Fareez in the 33rd minute, handing Malaysia all three points in a tightly contested encounter.
Indonesia started brightly, taking control of possession and pressing Malaysia’s backline early in the first half. However, it was Malaysia who created the first real chance in the 2nd minute, when Ahmad Yusuf broke through the offside trap, only to be denied by goalkeeper Noah Leo Duvert.
The home side, coached by Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto, continued to build patiently from the back, but struggled to penetrate Malaysia’s compact defensive structure. Indonesia’s first notable attempt came in the 9th minute, as Pandu Aryo fired a rebound from outside the box, though the ball went wide. A similar long-range effort from Keanu Senjaya in the 14th minute also missed the target.
Malaysia relied on quick counterattacks and set pieces to threaten. In the 18th minute, a corner from Nur Azam nearly resulted in a goal, but Noah Leo reacted well to secure the ball.
The breakthrough came in the 33rd minute, again from a corner situation. Nur Azam delivered a cross into the box, which was met by Mohammad Fareez. His header found the left corner of the net, beyond Noah Leo’s reach, giving Malaysia a 1-0 lead.
Indonesia pushed forward in search of an equalizer before halftime, but lacked precision in the final third. Malaysia almost doubled their advantage just before the break through a long-range shot by Mohammad Fazryel, which was saved by Noah Leo.
After the restart, Indonesia increased the tempo and created several chances, particularly through Sean Rahman. He came close shortly after halftime, but his effort was saved by Malaysian goalkeeper Adam Nurfakrullah. Another opportunity in the 53rd minute also went begging due to poor finishing.
Indonesia continued to dominate possession in the second half, but struggled to convert chances into goals. Sean Rahman again had a clear opportunity in the 69th minute, but failed to find the target.
Malaysia responded with a header from Ahmad Muzakif in the 72nd minute, but Noah Leo made an important save to keep Indonesia in the game.
As the match grew more intense, both teams engaged in physical duels, making for a tense contest. Substitute Girly Andrade nearly salvaged a point for Indonesia with a long-range effort in the 86th minute, but his shot sailed just over the crossbar.
The score remained 1-0 until the final whistle, securing a crucial win for Malaysia.
The result places Malaysia second in Group A with three points, while Indonesia sits third, trailing on head-to-head. Indonesia will face Vietnam in their next match at Gelora Delta Stadium in Sidoarjo on Sunday, April 19, at 07:30 PM WIB. Malaysia, meanwhile, will take on Timor-Leste at the same time in Gresik.
