Indonesia's Immigration Arrests Three Foreigners for Counterfeit Money Possession

9 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - West Jakarta immigration office arrested three foreign nationals from Cameroon and Canada for counterfeit money possession. They were arrested in an apartment in Daan Mogot, West Jakarta.

The Acting Director General of Immigration, Yuldi Yusman, reported that the arrest was a result of routine inspection against foreigners in lodging places. Officers found 16 USD 100 bills, totaling US$1600, in the room of the Cameroon national, identified as TFN.

"Immigration officers, who were suspicious of the physical appearance of the dollar bills, then coordinated with the Indonesian National Police's Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim) to conduct further investigation," said Yuldi in a press conference on Tuesday, May 27.

"After being examined in the forensic laboratory, the US dollars owned by TFN were declared counterfeit."

Further investigation then led to the arrest of two other foreign nationals—FJN, the associate of TFN who's also a Cameroon national, and BDD, a Canadian.

"No counterfeit money was found in FJN's residence, but officers discovered a WhatsApp group chat on FJN's phone in which TFN was also present, indicating strong connections between them," said Yuldi.

Meanwhile, officers confiscated US$900 in counterfeit money from BDD. The three of them have now been transferred to Bareskrim, for further probing.

Officers also discovered that both Cameroon nationsls have breached immigration laws, with FJN overstaying visit stay permit by 549 days.

"(FJN) entered Indonesia on May 9, 2023, and last extended the stay permit at the Depok Immigration Office, with the validity period until November 4, 2023," said the Head of the West Jakarta Immigration Office, Nur Raisha Pujiastuti.

Meanwhile, TFN, according to Puji, entered Indonesia on December 17, 2024, using a Limited Stay Permit (ITAS) for Investors at the company PT Mose Delta International. However, upon examination, the suspect admitted to having never made any investments as stated in the stay permit.

BDD entered Indonesia on December 14, 2024, using an ITAS Investor sponsored by PT. BahagiaKurnia Abadi. "During the probing, BDD admitted to never investing any capital in the company," said Puji.

FJN has violated Article 78 Paragraph (3) of the Immigration Law, which stipulates that foreigners who overstay their stay permit for more than 60 days shall be subject to administrative measures such as deportation and prohibition of re-entry. Meanwhile, TFN and BDD have abused stay permits and provided false statements during the application.

Their actions constitute a violation of Article 122 letter (a) and Article 123 letter (a) of Immigration Law.

Regarding the counterfeit dollars, the three foreign nationals are charged under Article 245 of the Criminal Code with a maximum punishment of 15 years in prison.

The Minister of Immigration and Corrections, Agus Andrianto, assured that the Directorate General of Immigration strives to supervise and monitor the presence of foreigners in Indonesia. "We will continue to synergize with other law enforcement agencies to ensure that every violation, whether administrative or criminal by foreigners, is handled firmly in accordance with the applicable law," Agus said.
