TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On its way to a 50-year journey, Jazz Goes To Campus (JGTC) introduces a new format entitled "The City Series." This is a music and educational event that combines discussion sessions and performances into one complete experience.
Held on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at Teater Besar, Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) Jakarta, the event will kick off with a talk show from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM, followed by the main concert of Jazz Goes To Campus The City Series featuring a lineup of renowned Indonesian musicians and arrangers.
Founder of JGTC, Candra Darusman, stated that this event is to maintain the consistency that has been built since 1977 and has run without a break for 49 years. JGTC started from student activities at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia.
"Because it is a kind of consistency, on one hand, JGTC on campus continues to run, and on the other hand, we also create series of activities in the city, especially at Taman Ismail Marzuki," he said at a Press Conference in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday, April 17, 2026.
The singer of "Kekagumanku" mentioned that this edition of JGTC will take place in several series both on the campus of Universitas Indonesia and outside the campus leading up to the 50th anniversary celebration. "This is also in line with Jakarta's 500th anniversary next year, so we mutually support the implementation in the city and on campus," he said.
In the next JGTC series, different jazz genres will be presented, considering jazz is a complex music genre. "There will be swing, rock, fusion, which we will present in the next series. We will also connect it with Betawi music," said Candra.
Agenda and Lineup
Jazz Goes To Campus: The City Series will feature two types of events, namely concerts and discussions. The discussion will be led by several panels such as Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Rano Karno, Candra Darusman, Chico Hindarto, Sri Hanuraga, and Agus S. Basuni. This discussion will cover the journey of JGTC from time to time, dynamics and skepticism towards jazz music, assimilation of jazz with local identity, including Betawi elements.
As for the concert, it will showcase collaborations from renowned Indonesian arrangers such as Erwin Gutawa, Tohpati, Ari Renaldi, and Adra Karim. Accompanied by the Bandung Jazz Orchestra and vocalist collaborations Alonzo & Rose Maryjane in a big band performance format.
"The City Series" is expected to be a step for JGTC to expand its audience reach, while strengthening its position as one of the continuously developing jazz festivals without leaving its artistic roots. By combining education, reflection, and performance, Jazz Goes To Campus aims to present jazz as a part of the heartbeat of the city, not only to be enjoyed, but also to be understood and celebrated together.
