TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Investigators from the Narcotics Directorate of the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim Polri) uncovered an alleged drug smuggling ring involving 10 kilograms of marijuana controlled by an inmate at Rajabasa Prison, Lampung. The investigation began when a joint team of police and Customs officers inspected a cargo truck at Bakauheni Port, South Lampung, on Tuesday morning, July 21, 2026.

"During the inspection, the joint team discovered a package suspected of containing 10 kilograms of marijuana," said Brigadier General Eko Hadi Santoso, Director of Narcotics Crimes at Bareskrim Polri, in a statement on Monday, August 3, 2026.

Following the discovery, the joint team escorted the delivery truck to a shipping warehouse in Tangerang. A tracking review revealed that the parcel was dispatched using a false name, phone number, and address.

The intended recipient had likewise used a fictitious identity. On July 22, 2026, the team collaborated with the shipping logistics company in Tangerang City, Banten, to identify who would claim the shipment. The following day, investigators executed a controlled delivery operation to apprehend the suspect.

"We monitored the location and waited for the person scheduled to collect the marijuana package in front of the logistics office in Tangerang City," Eko said.

Roughly 30 minutes later, an individual arrived on a motorcycle to inquire about the package. "Once the package was collected, the team arrested the recipient," Eko said.

Bareskrim investigators arrested two suspects, identified as MNF, 30, and MCS, 31. Officers detained MNF first in Karang Tengah before picking up MCS in Karang Mulya, Tangerang City, Banten. MNF was the individual sent to collect the package at the shipping office.

During questioning, MNF stated that he picked up the parcel on MCS's instructions via telephone and WhatsApp messages. MNF was promised financial compensation to retrieve the shipment. "MCS promised a payment of Rp700,000," Eko said.

After arresting MNF and seizing the evidence, officers proceeded to the designated meeting point in Karang Mulya to arrest MCS. Questioning of MCS revealed that the 10-kilogram marijuana shipment was directed by a prison inmate.

"The person who instructed him to receive and distribute the marijuana in Tangerang City was an inmate identified as A, serving time at Rajabasa Prison in Lampung," Eko said.

MCS also admitted that in June 2026, he had received an earlier 10-kilogram shipment of marijuana arranged and controlled by inmate A. Once received, MCS brought the parcel to his rented room to divide and package the drugs according to customer orders.

The joint team subsequently searched the room in North Kembangan, West Jakarta, where they seized plastic clip bags, small cardboard boxes, and adhesive tape used to package the drugs.

Police also confiscated motorcycles, mobile phones, national identity cards (KTP), and driver's licenses (SIM) belonging to the two suspects. The 10 kilograms of seized marijuana carried an estimated value of Rp41 million. Eko added that investigators are expanding the inquiry to dismantle the broader smuggling network.
