TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is set to discuss global oil availability issues with Vladimir Putin. Prabowo is scheduled to meet with the President of the Russian Federation as part of a state visit to Russia this week.

Prabowo departed for Russia from Jakarta on Sunday, before midnight, 12th of April 2026. The Chairman of the Gerindra Party will undertake a non-stop flight of approximately 12 hours before arriving in Russia on Monday morning local time.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya stated that Prabowo is expected to have a face-to-face meeting with Putin on the same day. "President Prabowo is scheduled to have a face-to-face meeting with President Vladimir Putin in the afternoon," said Teddy in a written statement released by the Presidential Secretariat after Prabowo's departure.

According to Teddy, the meeting between Prabowo and Putin is crucial, especially amidst conflicts in various regions, including the Middle East. "Amidst the ever-changing global dynamics, this meeting is of utmost importance," he stated.

Teddy mentioned that the two leaders will discuss several strategic issues, including strengthening national energy resilience through continued cooperation with the Russian government. "Continuing cooperation with the Russian government and ensuring a stable national energy supply, including oil availability," he said.

Additionally, Teddy stated that Prabowo and Putin will exchange views on the development of global geopolitical situations. "Advocating Indonesia's strategic position in maintaining global stability and peace," he added.

Prabowo took off from the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, Jakarta to fly to Russia on Sunday around 11:10 PM WIB. Several other officials accompanied Prabowo to Russia. Those joining Prabowo's entourage are Foreign Minister Sugiono, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

This visit in April 2026 will mark Prabowo's third visit to Russia as president. The former defense minister had previously visited Russia in June and December 2025. Prabowo met with Putin on both occasions.

President Prabowo had previously responded to assessments that he frequently travels abroad. According to the former defense minister, his official activities abroad aim to anticipate fluctuations in global oil prices.

According to Prabowo, a head of state has a responsibility to meet various development targets, which he stressed is not an easy task. "So, my friends, don't think standing here is an easy job," said Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Wednesday, 8th of April 2026.

He conveyed that those intending to become president must be prepared to face this reality. "For those who want to be president, congratulations, really. I'm already committed, so I have to work hard. I don't have any days off," said the four-time presidential candidate before his election.

Prabowo then discussed other people's assessments that he believed differed from the reality. "They said Prabowo travels abroad. My friends, to secure oil, we have to go everywhere," he said.

He cited his recent trip abroad to Japan at the end of March 2026 as an example. At that time, Prabowo also aimed to establish various energy collaborations.

During that time, Prabowo stated that he would go abroad again soon. However, he did not reveal the next destination. Prabowo claimed that the planned official trip also aimed to secure Indonesia's interests.

Since being inaugurated as president in October 2024, or a year and a half into his term, Prabowo has already made 35 visits abroad. Most recently, he visited Japan and South Korea at the end of March until early April 2026.
