TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is set to visit the Russian Federation this wee, where he is scheduled to meet President Vladimir Putin.

Foreign Minister Sugiono confirmed the planned meeting. “He (Prabowo) will meet with President Putin,” Sugiono said in a video statement quoted on April 12, 2026.

Sugiono said the two leaders are expected to discuss global geopolitical developments, particularly the energy situation and volatile oil prices amid conflicts in various regions. “Because this is something that is very strategic for Indonesia,” he added.

However, the government has not disclosed the exact date of Prabowo’s departure, with Sugiono only confirming that the president will travel to Russia.

The upcoming trip will mark Prabowo’s third visit to Russia as president. The former defense minister previously visited Moscow in June and December 2025, meeting Putin on both occasions.

Prabowo has previously responded to criticism over his frequent overseas travel, saying his international engagements are aimed at addressing global economic uncertainty, particularly fluctuations in oil prices.

He also said a head of state must work to meet national development targets under demanding conditions. “So, my friends, don’t think that standing here is an easy job,” Prabowo said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on April 8, 2026.

He added that those aspiring to become president must understand the demands of the role. “For those who want to become president, congratulations, truly. I have already become one so I have to work hard. I don’t have any time-off,” he said.

Responding to criticism that he travels abroad too often, Prabowo said such visits are necessary to safeguard national interests. “They say Prabowo travels abroad. My friends, to secure oil, yes, we have to go everywhere,” he said.

He pointed to his most recent overseas trip to Japan at the end of March 2026, during which he also sought investment cooperation for Indonesia.

Prabowo said he would travel abroad again soon, though he did not reveal the destination, stressing that the visit would again focus on protecting Indonesia’s interests.

Since taking office in October 2024, Prabowo has made at least 35 overseas trips. His most recent visits included Japan and South Korea between late March and early April 2026.
