TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vivin Cahyano Sungkono, an Executive Committee Member of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), has refuted rumors claiming that former national team coach Shin Tae-yong will return to lead the Garuda squad. According to her, the news is unfounded.
She also emphasized that Shin Tae-yong's appointment is not currently on PSSI's agenda. "We want to clarify that news about the return of coach Shin Tae-yong (STY) is baseless and invalid. There are no discussions regarding STY in PSSI's current agenda," said Vivin in her written statement in Jakarta on Monday, November 3, 2025.
She added that the federation respects and appreciates the contributions of Shin Tae-yong and Patrick Kluivert during their tenure with the national team. However, at present, PSSI chooses to focus on the future. "PSSI is very grateful for the performance of Shin Tae-yong and Patrick Kluivert during their respective tenures. But now is the time for all elements to focus on the future," said Vivin.
Regarding the vacant head coach position after Kluivert's dismissal on October 16, PSSI is currently conducting an intensive selection process to find the right candidate. "PSSI is working hard to find a senior coach who will lead the national team in the long term, in line with the new vision and roadmap for Indonesian football," she said.
Vivin requested the public's patience as the selection process is being conducted with careful consideration. "We want the best figure for this position. Achievement is an investment; it's not just about cost, but also the right time and strategy," she emphasized.
Previously, the PSSI terminated Patrick Kluivert's contract following the Indonesian national team's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Since then, the federation has not announced a replacement to lead Jay Idzes and his teammates in the Garuda team.
