TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 100 companies, including AI giants OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Perplexity, have signed an open letter calling for a global effort to strengthen AI-powered cybersecurity threats, DW reported.
"We have a limited window to strengthen cyber defenses," the letter read. "In the coming months, AI-enabled cyber attacks will become far more widespread and sophisticated as models around the world become increasingly capable."
Other signatories to the open letter include Adobe, AMD, Cisco, Dell, Oracle, IBM and German tech giant SAP as well as Deutsche Telekom.
Letter urges more funding, resources for cybersecurity
The companies called for a broad response, ranging from end-user companies strengthening their own security protocols to "frontier AI companies" building new observability and security tools to cope with AI-powered threats.
In particular, they also called on governments to pay for local and international responses to new threats to cybersecurity.
"Fund cyber defense, starting with essential services that lack the staff or budget to act," the letter read.
In the United States, the Trump administration imposed deep cuts to the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) last year, cutting staff by around a third.
The letter also urged governments to "expedite the expansion of trusted access programs, especially for critical infrastructure supply chains, and broaden access to defensive capabilities for other defenders."
AI agents reportedly go rogue
Last month, OpenAI said two of its models escaped their test environment, gained access to the internet and attacked Hugging Face, a site that AI developers use to store and share code.
The incident prompted Anthropic to check if its own models had also carried out similar attacks. It found three incidents in which a Claude model broke out of its testing environment and breached the systems of three organizations.
In June, the "Five Eyes" intelligence community — consisting of the U.S., the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand — issued a rare joint statement warning that new AI models were "fundamentally transforming both offensive and defensive cyber capabilities."
"The timeline is not years, it is months," the statement said.
