TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Top countries that produce the most steel continue to play a major role in shaping the global economy, with the metal remaining essential for everything from large-scale infrastructure projects to everyday household products.
In 2025 data from Visual Capitalist, global crude steel production reached 1,849.4 million tonnes, with China leading by a massive margin after producing 960.8 million tonnes, accounting for 52% of the world’s total steel output and exceeding the combined production of the next 12 largest steel-producing nations.
Valued for its strength, durability, and recyclability, steel remains a cornerstone of modern industry and future development in these nations:

China’s steel industry has experienced rapid growth over the past century. It has expanded significantly following the country’s Five-Year Plan in the 1950s, which prioritized steel production as a key driver of industrial development.
According to World Atlas, the majority of China’s steel output is used domestically, with estimates suggesting that around 85% to 90% remains within the country, while the sector also supports roughly three million jobs nationwide.
As the second country that produces the most steel, India has steadily expanded its steel industry in recent decades, driven by rapid urbanization, rising infrastructure development, and government efforts to strengthen domestic manufacturing.
Japan continues to consume a large share of its steel domestically, particularly across the construction and manufacturing sectors, while also maintaining a strong presence in global exports. In 2024, the country exported 31.1 million tonnes of steel to 121 countries and territories, representing nearly half of its total production.
At the same time, many advanced economies are increasingly prioritizing cleaner and more efficient steelmaking methods, investing in technologies such as electric arc furnaces and hydrogen-based production to reduce the industry’s heavy energy consumption and carbon emissions.
From transportation networks to renewable energy systems, growing industrial demand is expected to keep steel-producing nations at the center of global development.
