TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States military's Central Command (CENTCOM) said U.S. and Saudi Arabian forces launched joint precision strikes against Iran-aligned groups and their facilities in Iraq.
“U.S. Central Command and the Saudi Arabian Armed Forces conducted precision strikes in Iraq, (on) July 28, against Iran-aligned terrorists that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) directed to attack U.S. forces and Saudi energy infrastructure,” CENTCOM said in a press statement on Tuesday, as ANTARA reported.
U.S. and Saudi fighter jets targeted several logistics and weapons facilities in eastern Iraq. The strikes were carried out in response to more than 30 drone attacks carried out by Iran's IRGC in the previous 72 hours.
“The unwarranted attacks against U.S. forces were not successful,” CENTCOM stressed.
CENTCOM claims that Iran-aligned groups in Iraq carried out more than 600 “attempted attacks” against U.S. citizens and facilities between February and April. “The IRGC and its terrorist proxies must cease these attacks to avoid (a) further U.S. military response,” he added.
Separately, Saudi Arabia's Defense Ministry said on Wednesday morning that joint strikes with the U.S. against Iran-aligned targets in Iraq were carried out in response to attacks launched from Iraqi territory against oil facilities in Saudi Arabia.
Citing Article 51 of the UN Charter, which recognizes the right to self-defense, the ministry said Saudi Arabia and the U.S. carried out “precise and targeted strikes” against several targets in Iraq linked to attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure.
"The Kingdom emphasizes that it does not seek escalation but will respond to any aggression it faces," the ministry added.
Local media reported that the U.S. and Saudi Arabia carried out attacks on the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a coalition consisting mostly of Iran-backed Shiite armed groups.
Explosions were also reported in several areas of Iraq, including Basra and Wasit Province south of Baghdad.
The PMF command in Basra said their headquarters were hit by an airstrike on Wednesday at 2:00 a.m. local time. The PMF said on Wednesday that several of its official bases were targeted in “treacherous terrorist attacks” carried out by U.S. and Saudi forces.
“According to initial reports, the attacks resulted in the deaths and injuries of a number of individuals, as well as damage to several buildings and properties belonging to the PMF,” the group said in a statement.
“We consider this targeting a highly dangerous escalation, a violation of Iraq's sovereignty, and an attack on its official security institutions.”
The group said Iraqi authorities were closely monitoring the situation and were assessing the number of casualties and the extent of damage.
