TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The US and Iran delegations are likely to hold the second round of talks involving their respective technical teams in the capital city of Pakistan as early as Monday, April 20, 2026, a government source in Pakistan revealed to Anadolu on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
The source, who requested anonymity, mentioned that the technical teams from both sides are expected to meet in Islamabad for the next round. The meeting is aimed at finalizing an agreement on the conflict that has been ongoing for several weeks between the US and Iran, impacting global energy supplies and daily life in the West Asian region (Middle East).
“Once they reach a draft, President (Donald) Trump, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and some other important heads of states will air dash to the capital (Islamabad) to sign the deal," a source stated, referring to reports that, besides Trump and Pezeshkian, leaders of regional countries are also expected to be present at the signing of the agreement.
Negotiators from both conflicting parties have been exchanging messages through Islamabad since the end of the first round of talks on April 11-12 in Islamabad, to achieve a "maximum understanding" before entering the anticipated next stage of negotiations, the source added.
Pakistan's Army Chief General Asif Munir held direct talks with civilian and military leaders of Iran in Tehran this week, where Iran declared that the Strait of Hormuz is open to commercial ships.
US President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that if an agreement is reached with Iran, he is likely to go to Islamabad to attend the signing.
"“I would go to Pakistan, yeah. Pakistan has been great ... If the deal is signed in Islamabad, I might go," Trump told reporters.
A Pakistani government official who requested anonymity told Anadolu that logistical preparations have begun to welcome the US and Iran delegations, as well as the media crew who will cover the event.
On Friday, US media reported that the talks are expected to take place on Monday in Islamabad. However, there has been no official announcement from any party regarding the exact schedule of the next round.
An Iranian source familiar with the negotiation process stated that negotiators from both sides are expected to arrive in Islamabad on Sunday, April 19, 2026, according to CNN.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Friday that the Strait of Hormuz is "completely open” to all commercial ships. The decision was made "in line with the ceasefire in Lebanon," he said via the X social media platform.
However, on Saturday, Iran once again closed the Strait of Hormuz due to the ongoing blockade of its ports by the United States.
