CANTIKA.COM, Jakarta - Lately, the term 'low effort hangout' has been increasingly surfacing on social media. This trend, popularized by Gen Z, is changing the way people socialize, from typically being filled with agendas and pressures, to a more relaxed and natural approach.
Instead of focusing on big hangouts or bustling environments, this approach prioritizes connections that feel lighter and more organic. So, what exactly is a low effort hangout, and why is this trend gaining popularity? Let's dive in.
What is Low Effort Hangout?
Unlike traditional socializing styles such as attending parties or hanging out in crowded places, low effort hangout is more focused on simple activities.
From doing puzzles together, joining book clubs, to making ceramics. Activities take the center stage, not the need for continuous flowing conversations.
"Shared activities frequently draw attention away from you and onto something external," said Robert Alexander, assistant professor of psychology and counseling at the New York Institute of Technology, as quoted by Real Simple.
"Pauses in the conversation can come and go without feeling awkward, and you can feel relieved of the responsibility for sustaining the conversation moment-to-moment."
This approach also reduces the social pressures often seen in traditional interactions, such as the demand to always appear engaging, funny, or responsive.
"Soft socializing shifts the goal from performing to being present. It can help people feel safe, connected with others, and like they truly belong without needing to manage impressions," added Alexander.
"For many people, that can mean the difference between feeling restored by an event and feeling depleted."
Why is Alcohol Starting to be Left Behind?
One of the main characteristics of the Gen Z hangout trend is the minimal role of alcohol. In traditional social culture, there is often pressure to drink and follow the group's energy. For some individuals, this actually makes interactions uncomfortable.
"Alcohol-focused environments can increase social pressure," said Jordan Ashley, a sociologist and the founder of the Souljourn Yoga Foundation.
Consequently, alcohol consumption may encourage a sense of performativity and anxiety rather than facilitating casual conversation and informal socialization.
Why is Low Effort Hangout Becoming More Popular?
There are several factors driving this trend, especially among Gen Z:
1. Accustomed to Digital Connectivity
Gen Z grew up with nearly uninterrupted communication through social media.
"They text and interact in ways that keep relationships active even when not physically present," said Kent Bausman, a sociology professor at Maryville University of Saint Louis.
"Unlike previous generations, [Gen Z] have rarely experienced social silence. Because connection is continuous for many of them, the more traditional forms of in-person gatherings for socializing feel more like a burden," explained Bausman.
2. The Impact of the Pandemic
Many Gen Z individuals went through their teenage years during the pandemic, when social interaction was extremely limited.
"Experiencing social distancing at such a pivotal stage of development has influenced their current approach to relationships," said Ashley.
Gen Z is less interested in high-pressure social environments and prefers a more comfortable way to connect.
3. Economic and Time Factors
Low effort hangout tends to be more cost-effective and flexible. According to Bausman, low effort hangout allows individuals to join and participate at their own pace and leave without social penalty.
4. Shifting Values Behind This Trend
Gen Z is also known to prioritize authenticity and mental health. A study showed that 92 percent of Gen Z considers honesty with oneself and others very important.
"Simply sitting together in a casual setting or engaging in simple activities can feel more real because it’s unpolished and low-pressure,," said Bausman.
In addition, a report from The Annie E. Casey Foundation found that Gen Z is about 80 percent more likely to report mental health issues than previous generations. Hence, they tend to choose low-pressure interactions.
Ideas for Low Effort Hangout
If you want to try a lighter way to socialize, here are a few simple ideas:
- Sitting with friends while doing individual activities, such as reading or working
- Taking a leisurely walk or light hiking
- Cooking together at home
The low effort hangout trend shows that the way we build relationships is changing. For Gen Z, meaningful connections don't always have to be bustling, expensive, or full of pressure. Just being present and staying true to oneself is enough.
