TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Heavy to torrential rainfall has triggered severe flooding in parts of southwest China's Yunnan Province, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents as authorities monitor a reservoir at risk of breaching.
According to Xinhua, 8,115 residents in Mohan Town had been evacuated to temporary shelters by Sunday, August 30, 2026. Relief supplies were also dispatched to relocation sites to meet the basic needs of those affected.
The flooding followed heavy rainfall that hit the area, with firefighters conducting evacuation and disaster relief operations in Molong Village. Children and other residents were taken to temporary shelters as emergency teams worked to assist communities affected by the floods.
Residents at temporary shelters were provided with meals while authorities continued relief operations.
As reported by Antara, heavy to torrential rains also battered Mengla in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, on August 28 and 29. The rainfall caused flooding and placed the Yantang Reservoir at risk of breaching.
More than 2,200 residents living near the reservoir were evacuated to safety as authorities took measures to address the situation and limit the impact of spreading floodwaters.
The Yantang Reservoir remained under monitoring, with local authorities continuing their response efforts.
Drone images from Molong Village showed houses and farmland damaged by floodwaters, highlighting the impact of the flooding on local communities and agricultural areas.
The emergency response has involved firefighters and local authorities working to evacuate residents, provide essential supplies and monitor areas at risk as heavy rainfall continues to threaten affected parts of Yunnan.
