TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto received a lifetime membership card from Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) during the closing ceremony of the organization’s 35th Congress in Jombang, East Java, on Monday, August 31, 2026.
The card was handed to Prabowo by newly elected NU Supreme Leader (Rais Aam) Miftachul Akhyar before the president delivered his speech at Bahrul Ulum Islamic Boarding School in Tambakberas, Jombang.
Prabowo appeared pleased as he showed the card to the audience. He said he had fulfilled his promise to attend the closing ceremony after receiving a call from Yahya Cholil Staquf, widely known as Gus Yahya, several days earlier.
“I kept my promise. Because I received a call from Gus Yahya a few days ago. My membership card was ready. That’s why I came,” Prabowo said.
Prabowo said he was particularly impressed by the card because it stated that his membership was valid for life.
“It says lifetime member,” he said.
Prabowo had previously said he had been asking Gus Yahya, then chairperson of the NU Central Board (PBNU), for a membership card for some time.
“I have been asking for an NU card for a long time. If possible, before the closing of the congress,” Prabowo said.
The request was eventually fulfilled at the closing ceremony, where Prabowo officially received the card.
Prabowo Calls Second Invitation an Honor
In his opening remarks at the closing ceremony, Prabowo also described his return to the NU Congress as a great honor.
“This is a great honor for me to be invited for the second time,” Prabowo said, referring to his attendance at both the opening and closing ceremonies of the 35th NU Congress, as cited by Antara.
Prabowo had attended the opening ceremony on August 27, when he publicly mentioned his long-standing request for an NU membership card from Gus Yahya.
He even joked that he would return for the closing ceremony if the card was ready.
“I’ve been asking Gus Yahya for an NU card for a long time. So, you still owe me one, right? If possible, before the closing of the congress. The closing is on the 31st, right? If there’s a membership card, I’ll come again on the 31st,” Prabowo said at the time.
His return to Jombang on Monday followed the issuance of the card, fulfilling the promise he had made during the opening ceremony.
