TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the provincial government will conduct river normalization during the prolonged dry season.

"For Jakarta, once again, we will conduct river normalization when water levels are low," Pramono said after attending the Capacity Building Event on Bond Issuance at the Tribrata Hotel & Convention Center in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.

River normalization will soon be carried out in several locations cleared by the Water Resources Agency and the National Land Agency. Pramono noted that the administration has also prepared contingency measures in the event of a water crisis during the extended dry spell. "However, Jakarta is not experiencing a water crisis at the moment," he said.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that the 2026 dry season will be drier and longer than usual due to the El Niño phenomenon, with the drought expected to peak between July and September 2026.

So far, declining water levels along the Ciliwung River have already been recorded at several points in Bogor, West Java. These include the Babakan Pasar area and the Katulampa Dam.

As reported earlier, the governor warned residents of fire outbreaks during the long dry season ahead. He stressed that one of the measures to avoid a blaze is by avoiding littering.

"We strongly urge residents to participate in the joint security efforts, especially in sensitive, densely populated areas like Tambora, Cakung, and so on. For example, don't throw cigarette butts carelessly after smoking, as this could trigger a fire," Pramono said in South Jakarta on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.
