TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The film Ghost in the Cell, directed by Joko Anwar, is slated to be screened in 86 countries. Distribution rights have already been acquired globally, even before the movie’s official release in Indonesia on April 16, 2026.

Writer and director Joko Anwar reveals that Ghost in the Cell is a project born from the realities of Indonesia. This horror-comedy sheds light on the dark side of power and corrupt systems, focusing on ordinary people trapped within them and exploring what happens when the truth is concealed until it finally surfaces.

"Initially, we did not think that audiences in other countries could relate, but it turns out this is not just an Indonesian story. It is also a story of America, Brazil, India, and France, because corruption knows no nationality, and injustice is a universal language," Joko Anwar stated in a press release.

According to the director, the struggle for truth is understood by everyone. "That’s why 86 countries were willing to acquire the distribution rights. It’s not just because it is a great Indonesian film by local standards, but because it meets their global standards and remains deeply relevant to them," he said.

The 86 countries include North America, Latin America, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Russia, Australia, India, and across Asia. Ghost in the Cell was acquired by the German-based distributor Plaion Pictures, a partnership that ensures the film will be screened in cinemas across German-speaking countries.

"The global screening of Ghost in the Cell in 86 countries proves that its production quality has been widely recognized, sparking international interest in bringing the film to their respective audiences," said producer Tia Hasibuan.

The film held its world premiere at the 2026 Berlinale. Produced by Come and See Pictures in collaboration with RAPI Films, Legacy Pictures, and Barunson E&A, which also serves as the international sales agent, the movie features a star-studded cast.

Ghost in the Cell stars Abimana Aryasatya, Bront Palarae, Danang Suryonegoro, Endy Arfian, Lukman Sardi, Mike Lucock, Yoga Pratama, Morgan Oey, Aming, Kiki Narendra, Rio Dewanto, Tora Sudiro, Almanzo Konoralma, Haydar Salishz, Arswendy Bening Swara, Dewa Dayana, Faiz Vishal, Jaisal Tanjung, and Ho Yuhang, while introducing Magistus Miftah.
