Nepal Tightens Everest Climbing Requirements, Raises Fees

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Rajendra Lama, General Secretary of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, said that it is preparing regulations to ban inexperienced climbers from attempting to summit Mount Everest at extreme altitudes, and details of the bill are currently being finalized.

As quoted by ANTARA, one of the most significant new measures requires anyone planning to climb Everest to have prior high-altitude climbing experience. According to an association official, the requirement aims to ensure that climbers have sufficient experience in high-altitude environments before attempting the world’s highest and most technically challenging commercial expedition.

The new law is still being developed. Nepalese lawmakers are debating how many previous climbs of peaks above 7,000 and 8,000 meters are required for a climbing permit.

Citing the mountaineering publication Explorersweb, it is unlikely that the new rules will be implemented in time for the spring climbing season in 2027.

The association also strongly recommends that climbers obtain comprehensive insurance covering high-altitude climbing, emergency helicopter evacuation, and repatriation costs to their home country if necessary.

The government has also changed the fee for climbing the world's highest peak this year. “For foreign climbers using the standard route, the cost is now US$15,000 for the spring season (March–May), US$7,500 for the autumn season (September–November), and US$3,750 for the winter and summer seasons,” said Lama.

Consequently, the cost per climber during the spring season has risen from the previous US$11,000 to US$15,000. The new fee system is already in effect and is being applied during the current climbing season.
