TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Researchers have developed a new type of artificial intelligence (AI) chip that can mimic the human brain's capabilities. This semiconductor device can control instinctive motor responses. Its design resembles the cerebellum, the part of the central nervous system responsible for regulating balance and body control.

The research, involving 14 international researchers, was published in the Nature Communications journal on July 10, 2026, titled "Cerebellum-inspired memtransistors enable emergent differentiation for hardware-efficient novelty detection." This breakthrough is considered crucial for overcoming the challenges of conventional AI chips.

This research suggests that biological nervous systems can instantly recognize environmental changes or unfamiliar signals without having to relearn all the data. This mechanism, centered on cerebellar circuitry, is replicated in hardware via a memtransistor network. This process helps extract spatial and temporal features simultaneously from sensory input.

"The device could pave the way for highly responsive, low-power AI systems capable of spotting and reacting to unusual events without relying on the massive computing resources of data centers," reads a Live Science review quoted on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

In simulation tests using electrocardiogram data, the new chip was shown to detect irregular heartbeats with 98 percent accuracy. This is claimed to be twice as fast as existing AI systems.

The researchers project that this technology could be applied to a variety of autonomous robotic devices that require millisecond reflex decisions. It also has potential for use in implantable medical devices, such as smart pacemakers, that require rapid data analysis and efficient battery consumption.
